Choosing your pillows is a very personal thing and with so much choice available, buying  pillows isn’t that simple. The wide range can make it hard to choose, but take the time to educate yourself and shop for something that suits you.

Dust mites are microscopic and thrive in warm and humid environments such as bedding. Their droppings are the most common cause of dust mite related allergies. Dust mites can't be seen with the naked eye, but they play havoc with our noses, throat, eyes, ears, skin & lungs!

The National Asthma Council of Australia (NAC) doesn't recommend any specific type of pillow for sufferers of asthma or allergies.

However, it does suggest that you cover your pillow (and your mattress and quilt) with a specially designed dust-resistant cover. These covers completely encase the pillow to reduce any contact with dust mites, and can also be washed.

NAC recommends washing the dust-resistant covers at least every two months to keep any problems at bay.

As general rule you should look to replace your pillow every six months to two years although this does depend on the pillow fill.

Check with the manufacturer at the time of your purchase as the expected life span of your pillow will really depend on what material is used and the quality of it.

Some pillow manufacturers even provide a tag on the pillow so you can jot down the date you bought it, to see how it's ageing.

When choosing quilts, deciding on the fill can be difficult. Will you invest in a high-quality and comparatively expensive pure down quilt or a combination of feather and down. If the quilt is for yourself (rather than the guest room, where it'll only be used occasionally), take the time to think about your needs, as your choice of fill can make all the difference to a restful and luxurious night's sleep.
